Session 1: Living by Faith? The Basics.
|
What needs to be covered
Faith is a 'spiritual' word. You can't put 'faith' in a jam-jar like jam, or spread it on your bread. Like so many other important and (often short) spiritual words like hope, joy, peace, love, trust, calm and it is recognised only by human beings and we identify it by what it produces both within us and out in the big wide world. Although 'faith' defies slick description, it has been identified for millenia as the essential essence of risk taking,walking a new route, stepping out into the unknown, and getting married. Easily mistaken for presumption, irrationality, - foolishness even - faith is a little-discussed quality of human life that we all have to one degree or another. Sometimes resulting in 'huge leaps of faith'. At other times our faith seems to be minimal, as we demand proof, evidence, and contracts. The evidence is that we have more than we think! In this session I'll share some of my thoughts on the subject, but this is a workshop not a lecture, so I'll be asking "What do you think 'Living by Faith' is actually all about?" We'll discover new stuff and grow in the process, look at some definitions, and consider some of the qualities of faith together.

Session 2: Leading and Following by Faith
|
This workshop is particularly about where faith fits in to self-leadership. Faith in ourselves, our abilities, our choices. The word 'confidence' comes from a latin root of two words: 'con' (with) and 'fides' (faith) - with faith. So having faith in ourselves, 'trusting yourself'. Self leadership is a big deal these days. The question is, who is following? Well, you are of course. So how is it we rarely talk about a person following their own leadership? Is that what 'walking the talk' is all about? Both have unique risks with one part of us 'deciding' and another part implementing those decisions. Can I trust 'Me' as a leader and a follower? Can I trust my ability to lead? And to follow? And what does 'following your heart' really mean? (And are we actually different 'parts'?) This workshop introduces the principles of leading AND following by faith. Human beings are 'all of a piece' and we in turn take quite a holistic approach to Living By Faith.

Session 3: Objects of Faith - What and who do we put our faith in?
|
Fate? God? The bus driver? The truth is, every day, from the moment we get up to the moment we go to bed (and every moment in between) faith is involved. We trust the Laws of Nature - gravity, your heart to beat whilst you sleep, and the sun to shine. We trust people, materials, our faculties. The ability to reason, to love, to hope. Most of the things we trust we never think about. Most of them are hidden, some profoundly invisible. (How does your heart beat automatically two billion times in your lifetime?) Our trust in one another is staggering. The clothes we wear are made by people, shipped by people, sold to us by people - and we trust them not to let us down by the seams splitting in public! Then there's the food we eat. Who grows it, prepares it, provides it? Can we trust them? However, there's also the more existential stuff. Faith in the future - whatever that means. That life will continue. That people are worth something.

Session 4: Living in the Outback of Faith
|
A joke in Australia goes "If you want to explore the outback, go in a Landrover Defender. If you want to come back again, opt for a Toyota Landcruiser!" Neither will take you to where we're going - or get you back again! So not that kind of outback maybe. The Outback of Faith is the unexplored or rarely visited places in life - particularly your life - that for one reason or another you have preferred to avoid up to now. Perhaps you intend to go out into the outback and never come back? Or you're concerned about the unpredictability and wildness of those places, which seem, when you consider them, to be barren and too extreme, riddled with risk and danger. Maybe they bring back memories you'd rather leave buried out there in the bush. Or maybe you're thinking you'll find some old wrecks - or worse, situations that you suspect are still alive and potentially dangerous, so see it as wisdom not to 'go there'. Or maybe you don't have a Land cruiser or Land-rover, or fear that even though you do, it's been left in the garage for too long and you're asking will it withstand the journey. That's what living by faith is about... isn't it?

Session 5: What Faith-filled People Believe. (And what they don't.)
|
Yep. This is about some of the underlying, undergirding, beliefs and resources that drive or draw us beyond the walls and windows, furniture and fittings of everyday living, beyond the limit-lines of natural thinking, the self-erected walls of human security, to stake out new territory. Where, exactly? What convictions take people beyond the ordinary, the conventional, and the normal into virgin territory? Do you have to hear a call, have a calling - a vocation? "We'll all make it in the end." "I went bancrupt trying that.""Life is spelt R.I.S.K. Get over it!" "Let me show you the scars..." "I knew if I avoided it this time I'd never try again." "My daughter had a psychological breakdown because of that." "Nothing is THAT bad." What do comments like these reveal? It's going to be interesting exploring this one. Now, about those beliefs....

Session 6: Overcoming the Booby traps and Stumbling Blocks along the Pathway of Faith
|
A bit of a long title, but this one is important. Practical. Down to earth. Even a bit hardcore maybe. Today men and women have a longing for Certainty (the polar opposite of faith). Instead we encounter fear, doubt, a safe job with a salary, comfort, security, insurance policies, retirement plans - where do these fit in? What are the hidden tripwires that will cripple your journey and clobber your faith? Dave set out with his backpack into the woods, and 200 metres from home remembered something he'd forgotten to bring. He went back and popped it in his backpack pocket, and set out again. Not much further in he remembered something else and went back for it. (You know where this is going, don't you!) He went back several times with his backpack getting heavier after each return, till it was too heavy to carry, so he had a cup of tea - he was English - and stayed the night. And the next night. Later that month he handed in his Adventurer badge. What do we leave behind? What is important to take? What is freedom?

Session 7: When Living by Faith goes wrong.
|
What do we do when our faith fails, when we are let down, when it doesn't turn out the way we believed it would? When we ABSOLUTELY believed it would happen, and it didn't? Or when someone ELSE fails to deliver what we trusted them to do. Big time. What are the consequences of 'failed faith'? Living by faith and living with the consequences of so doing are very different. And what about rescuing 'failed faith'? "Trust is like a tree. After many years of growth is can be cut down in a few words. For ever. It can grow again, but like a tree, it will never be quite the same." Who and what have you wished you never put your faith in? Where does RE-starting to live by faith come in? How about some hints on 'how'?

Session 8: Examples of Living by Faith
|
Who are these faith-filled people we want to be like, and who (apparently) have achieved so much? We all have examples that we admire. Whether we follow them or not may not be quite so clear! And what examples of Living by Faith do we have in our own histories? What happened? Be prepared to be inspired by the lives of men and women throughout history who never let fear, doubt, or an insistence on provable evidence, stop them from stepping out of the boat and walking on water. Hmmmm... now what?

Session 9: The Cost of Living By Faith.
|
Okay, so everything has a price. You don't get something for nothing. "You want an adventurous life, filled with surprises and excitement? Just sign here - oh, and sign this disclaimer. We won't take responsibility for what might happen to you on this trip. And the price? It cost no less than everything." Nothing of value is free - not usually anyway. If it costs us nothing we rarely value it. Learning to live by faith is vastly rewarding - to be stretched, stripped and challenged, then renewed, revitalised and refreshed - and even rebuilt - as you overcome and stand tall again, with new energy, strength insight, wisdom, inspiration and experiences. And you WILL fall over on the trip. AND get up again! The great thing is, no one is too poor to be able to afford it. Living by faith starts with simply making that choice.

Session 10: Journey. Destination. Companions. Reward.
|
Winding up the series we step back a little and do some 'preretrospection'. It means looking back from where we haven't arrived yet, if you get my meaning. Who did you travel with? Where are you now - and was that your intended destination when you set out? Did you actually hear a VOICE calling you? (It's where we get the word 'vocation' from - vocal, latin: voce.) What map and compass did you choose? How well have they served you? What beliefs did you change on the way? What discoveries? Living by faith is about stepping out into the unknown, trusting yourself and going beyond yourself. Who knows, we might even touch on subjects like fate, the 'Universe', luck, God, chance, choice, destiny, and calling. And then there's that simple little question that we carry with us each step of the way, often buried deep and gently insisting on an answer as we walk the talk. In my view its so very very crucial to the long-term wellbeing of the Faith Traveller: "What's the point?" Having a satisfying answer to that one is definitely an advantage on this journey.
